INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS: WHY FORESTS MATTER FOR PEOPLE AND THE PLANET
Forests are some of the most dynamic and diverse ecosystems on Earth, and also provide a multitude of services to humans. hey clean the air we breathe, regulate temperatures, filter water, shelter wildlife, and support the livelihoods of millions of people. The International Day of Forests, observed every year on March 21, reminds us that these landscapes are more than collections of trees. They are complex living systems that influence climate stability, community wellbeing, and biodiversity across the globe.
This day was created by the United Nations to encourage countries, communities, and individuals to understand the value of forests and to participate in their protection. It also highlights the growing pressure forests face through deforestation, land conversion, resource extraction, and rising temperatures. This day’s goal is to celebrate forests and inspire action that protects them for generations to come.
WHAT DOES A THRIVING FOREST LOOK LIKE?
A thriving forest is full of movement and connection. It has rich soil that stores carbon and supports plants of all sizes. It has clean water flowing through streams that nourish wildlife and nearby communities. It offers shade, stability, and habitat. In a thriving forest, species interact through pollination, nutrient cycling, and natural regeneration in ways that keep the ecosystem resilient.
For humans, a thriving forest means healthier air, cooler temperatures, and protection from flooding and erosion. Forests also support cultural traditions, food security, and economic opportunities for communities who depend on them. Cities, farms, and coastal regions all rely on forests for climate regulation and maintenance of water systems.
GLOBAL AND LOCAL EFFORTS KEEPING FORESTS ALIVE
Rainforest Alliance supports sustainable agriculture and forest protection through community led approaches. American Forests restores forest landscapes in both rural and urban settings. The International Union for Conservation of Nature provides science based guidance for countries working to conserve biodiversity.
In Costa Rica, national policies and community partnerships have helped the country double its forest cover since the 1980s through incentives for landowners to conserve and restore their land. In Oregon, tribes and conservation groups are working together to manage forests with cultural burning practices that reduce wildfire risk and support ecological health. In Ghana, youth organizations lead tree planting and awareness campaigns that strengthen community stewardship.
3 ACTIONS YOU TAKE TO SUPPORT FORESTS
1. Support organizations restoring and protecting forests — Groups such as Rainforest Alliance, American Forests, and One Tree Planted invest in long term restoration, community partnerships, and sustainable forest management
2. Support Indigenous led forest stewardship — Indigenous communities carry long standing knowledge of forest management. Learning from and supporting their stewardship initiatives strengthens cultural and ecological resilience.
3. Join local tree planting and habitat restoration events — Join a local volunteer days focused on planting native trees, removing invasive plants, and caring for young forests.
