INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HOPE
JULY 12
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HOPE: FINDING POSSIBILITY FOR POSITIVE CHANGE
Hoope shapes how people act, how communities plan, and how societies decide what kind of future they want to build. The International Day of Hope, recognized each year on July 12, highlights the role that optimism, resilience, and shared effort play in solving global challenges. It reminds us that progress happens when people can imagine a better world and are supported in taking steps toward it.
This day encourages reflection and active participation. Hope grows when people see their actions matter, when communities support one another, and when meaningful solutions take root. Whether it is protecting natural resources, shaping climate policy, or strengthening social systems, hope becomes stronger when people recognize their ability to influence change. The day invites us to look closely at the real work happening across the world and the momentum those efforts create.
WHAT DOES HOPE LOOK LIKE IN PRACTICE?
Hope is visible in moments where people choose care over resignation. It shows up in communities rebuilding after storms, in youth designing solutions for local climate challenges, and in neighborhoods creating green spaces that offer shade, clean air, and connection. It is found in scientific breakthroughs, in long term conservation plans, and in small collective victories that rebuild trust in the possibility of progress.
In daily life, hope can look like a community garden where neighbors grow food together, or a coastal town restoring wetlands to reduce flood risk. It can look like teachers incorporating environmental learning into their classrooms or families participating in local sustainability programs. These actions may seem small, but they become powerful when many people take part. Hope is strengthened by steady participation in solutions that improve life for both people and the planet.
GLOBAL AND LOCAL EFFORTS BUILDING A MORE HOPEFUL FUTURE
The Solutions Project funds community led climate initiatives across the United States. The Climate Reality Project trains people to advocate for science based climate action. The Global Greengrants Fund provides direct support to grassroots environmental defenders around the world.
In Minneapolis, community led resilience hubs provide resources during extreme weather events while also strengthening neighborhood ties throughout the year. In Kenya, youth groups are restoring degraded land through tree planting and water conservation projects. Across the Pacific Islands, local leaders are combining traditional knowledge with climate adaptation planning to protect communities and ecosystems.
3 ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE TO GROW HOPE
Look for local groups creating solutions and join their efforts —Hope grows when people feel connected to community action. Get involved with a neighborhood mutual aid group, a youth climate club, or a local conservation project.
Learn one environmental or social issue well enough to talk about it with confidence — Hope becomes stronger when people feel informed. Choosing one topic, studying it, and sharing what you learn with friends or local leaders helps build a culture of understanding and participation.
Share positive examples of progress — Hope grows when people see momentum. Sharing stories of community achievements, environmental wins, or local innovations helps counter the sense that problems are too large to solve and encourages wider participation.
