How We Work
Build the shared foundation. Then let everyone build on it.
Thousands of organizations are doing good environmental work, mostly in parallel. Their data doesn't connect, their results can't be compared, and proven ideas rarely travel beyond the community that found them. Environmental Alliance exists to fix that, not by adding one more program, but by building the infrastructure all of them can share.
Our theory of change
Build shared infrastructure
Maps, data standards, and tools that any organization can use, regardless of size.Connect the organizations already doing the work
Groups keep their own identity and programs. They gain the ability to see and work alongside each other.Coordinate action in place
When efforts share a map, communities can see gaps, avoid duplication, and act together.Measure results the same way everywhere
Comparable results show what actually works and where.Carry what works to the next community
Proven approaches spread, participation grows, and the cycle repeats.
Four pillars
- GeoDesign
- Designing change with geography and behavior in view at the same time.
- Interoperability standards
- Common formats so data from different groups fits together.
- Coalition architecture
- Structures that let organizations collaborate without giving up independence.
- Accountability frameworks
- Clear, shared measures of progress that anyone can check.
The Global Environmental Index is where the four pillars come together as a working proof of concept.
Principles we hold ourselves to
- Demonstration over declaration
- We'd rather show working results than announce intentions.
- No favorites
- We're deliberately not a membership organization, so no single group or idea gets preferred treatment.
- Non-political by design
- Our work sits outside the political spectrum, not in the middle of it. Everyone is welcome to participate.
- Your data stays yours
- Organizers keep ownership of their participants' personal information. Only anonymous totals are shared.
- A long view
- We're building for generations, not for the next campaign cycle.
How we're funded
Where support comes from shapes what an organization can say and do. We keep it simple.
- Source integrity
- We don't accept support from fossil fuel producers, tobacco, or businesses that depend on pollution.
- No government funding
- At any level. It keeps our work independent and our standards our own.
- Shared commitment
- Environmental Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a 1% for the Planet partner.
