WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY

MAY 10 & OCTOBER 11

Migratory birds are those species that travel over a period of time (seasonally) between breeding and non-breeding regions, which in many cases, cover thousands of miles in search of fluctuating food, climates and nesting sites. These migrations link habitats among continents and depend on complete ecosystems, secure stopover locations, and conducive environmental conditions; disturbances in the form of habitat loss, climate change, and light pollution can profoundly influence migration pathways and species survival.

World Migratory Bird Day is a worldwide event that is held annually to sensitize people on the importance of conserving migratory species and the protection of environments in which they rely during their migration. Learned alongside events, education and policy advocacy, the day is an annual collaboration between governments, non-profits, sciences and communities to foster international collaboration and innovative action to sustain healthy populations of migratory birds and their linking ecosystems.

This World Migratory Bird Day 2026, the Environmental Alliance calls on partners and supporters to act together to protect bees:

  • Hold a community bird walk and cleanup at a nearby wetland or park on World Migratory Bird Day combining brief educational talks on migratory birds and species with litter and invasive plant clearing.

  • Partner with schools and libraries for a week-long art and writing contest about migratory birds; display winners publicly and give participating families simple habitat-friendly planting kits.

  • Arranging a volunteer led Lights Out campaign on a night of high migration and distribute decals on window-collisions and outreach literature to businesses and residents to minimize nighttime fatalities of the birds.
