INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLEAN AIR FOR BLUE SKIES
SEPTEMBER 7
Clean air and blue skies are fundamental indicators of a healthy environment and essential to human well-being, supporting respiratory and cardiovascular health, ecosystems, and economic productivity. Sustained improvements in air quality result from coordinated actions—reducing emissions from industry, transportation, and agriculture; transitioning to cleaner energy sources; enforcing strong monitoring and regulatory frameworks; and empowering communities with accessible information. Protecting air quality also addresses climate change co-benefits, as many pollutants are linked to greenhouse gas sources, making integrated policies that reduce both air pollution and carbon emissions crucial for long-term sustainability.
The International Day of Clean Air and Blue Skies, observed annually to raise global awareness and catalyze action, brings together governments, cities, businesses, scientists, and civil society to prioritize air quality improvements and share best practices. For 2026, the theme is “Clean Air, Healthy Choices: Acting Together for People and Planet,” emphasizing that individual and collective decisions—ranging from urban planning and public transit investment to cleaner industrial processes and household energy choices—shape air quality outcomes. The theme underscores collaboration across sectors and borders to implement science-based policies that ensure clean air and blue skies for current and future generations.
Clear air, bright skies—let’s unite science, business, and community to protect the breath we share.
How can we promote this ?
Coordinate a global campaign with NGOs and local governments to share consistent, science-based messages, visuals, and toolkits (social posts, press releases, flyers) showing practical actions for individuals, businesses, and policymakers to cut air pollution and protect atmospheric health.
Organize synchronized community actions—virtual and in-person events (clean-air pledges, vehicle-free days, tree planting, air-monitoring workshops)—using accessible local air-quality data and measurable targets to track participation and short-term emission reductions.
Engage business and policy stakeholders via multi-stakeholder roundtables and recognition programs that promote clean technologies, commute solutions, and policy commitments (low-emission zones, industrial controls), with public reporting to show progress and sustain momentum.
