WORLD RAINFOREST DAY
JUNE 22
Rainforests are thick, synergistically charged systems that grow close to the equator and in temperate regions, and are important in controlling the climate on our planet, biodiversity, and the maintenance of Indigenous and local peoples; the canopy layers cast into the air are able to intercept rain and sunlight, forming microclimates that support thousands of plant and animal species, many of which remain yet to be described by science, as well as to store a lot of carbon and to control atmospheric moisture levels.
World Rainforest Day is an international event celebrated annually on the first day of May, which emphasizes the importance of rainforests in maintaining biodiversity, climate regulation and livelihood of millions of people; it is also a call to governments, businesses, communities and individuals to conserve and recover these ecosystems with science based conservation, sustainable land-use and policies to honor indigenous rights and local knowledge.
Importance Of Forest
Forests comprise approximately 31 percent of the total land in the world and hold approximately 289 gigatons of carbon in their biomass, which makes them highly important carbon sinks that can be used to reduce the impact of climate change; they support over 80 percent of total terrestrial biodiversity, they host numerous species, and they provide ecosystem services like water purification, soil stabilization and flood control; forests support the livelihoods of over 1.6 billion people, many of whom directly depend on forest products as food, fuel and income; they also contribute to the local and regional climates by influencing rainfall and temperature.
Protect forests — protect life, climate, future.
