WORLD OCEANS DAY
JUNE 8
Oceans cover about 71% of Earth’s surface and contain more than 97% of the planet’s water, functioning as a vast, interconnected system that regulates climate, supports marine biodiversity, and sustains human livelihoods. They absorb and redistribute heat and carbon dioxide, drive weather patterns through currents and waves, and provide food, jobs, and cultural value to billions of people. Despite their scale and importance, oceans face growing pressures from overfishing, pollution, habitat loss, and warming, making coordinated science-based stewardship essential for maintaining their health and the services they provide.
Oceans and freshwater systems sustain life by regulating climate, producing oxygen, supporting fisheries and biodiversity, supplying drinking water and irrigation, and enabling global trade and cultural livelihoods; protecting them is essential for human health, food security, resilient economies, and a stable planet.
Preserve our oceans—now and always—for the wellbeing of the planet and every species that relies on them.
Did You Know ?
The ocean covers 71% of the Earth’s surface.
37 out of 50 critical minerals can be found in the ocean!
There is enough salt in the ocean to cover the whole surface of the Earth.
The number of species that live in the ocean is unknown.
What Can You Do ?
Host a neighborhood “Adopt-a-Shore” cleanup partnering with local NGOs and businesses; provide branded gloves, bags, signage, and a short science talk on marine debris sources and impacts.
Launch a social media campaign with daily facts, member spotlights, and a simple pledge tool for actions (reduce single-use plastics, support sustainable seafood, volunteer), amplified by partner organizations.
Organize a virtual panel of scientists, fishery leaders, and community advocates to present policy solutions and practical steps, followed by breakout sessions for local action planning and commitments.
