WORLD OCEANS DAY
JUNE 8
The oceans occupy approximately 71 percent of the earth and hold over 97 percent of the water available on the earth and act as an interconnected vast system regulating climate, maintaining marine biodiversity, and nurturing human livelihoods. They absorb and redistribute heat and carbon dioxide, push weather patterns with currents and waves and supply food, jobs and cultural value to billions of people. Although large and significant, oceans are increasingly experiencing intense challenges due to overfishing, pollution, habitat degradation, and warming and need to have coordinated science-based stewardship to sustain their health and services they offer.
Oceans and freshwater systems sustain life through maintaining a healthy climate, generation of oxygen, fisheries and biodiversity, drinking water and irrigation, global trade and cultural livelihoods, and their conservation is vital to human health, food security, robust economies, and a stable planet.
Preserve our oceans—now and always—for the wellbeing of the planet and every species that relies on them.
Did You Know ?
The ocean covers 71% of the Earth’s surface.
37 out of 50 critical minerals can be found in the ocean!
There is enough salt in the ocean to cover the whole surface of the Earth.
The number of species that live in the ocean is unknown.
What Can You Do ?
Host a neighborhood “Adopt-a-Shore” cleanup partnering with local NGOs and businesses; provide branded gloves, bags, signage, and a short science talk on marine debris sources and impacts.
Introduce a social media campaign with the facts every day, member highlights and a simple pledge tool (cut down on a single-use plastic, help save the sea, volunteer), promoted by the partner organizations.
Organize a virtual panel of scientists, fishery leaders, and community advocates to present policy solutions and practical steps, followed by breakout sessions for local action planning and commitments.
