INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION

JANUARY 24

Education is one of the most powerful tools to protect children and help them thrive. In emergencies, education can mean safety, stability and hope. Yet millions of children are still out of school due to poverty, conflict, extreme weather disasters and ongoing crises. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn. A good quality education helps children reach their full potential.

Education drives opportunity, mobility, and society’s ability to tackle economic, environmental, and health challenges. It builds literacy, critical thinking, and technical skills, boosting civic participation, workforce readiness, and resilience. In the U.S., expanded schooling, higher college enrollment, desegregation, and investments in special education and early childhood have improved attainment and diversified talent, but gaps by race, income, and place persist.

Globally, access is uneven: teacher shortages, gender gaps, and disruptions from conflict, climate change, and pandemics hinder progress; low‑resource countries lack infrastructure, materials, and trained staff. Solutions require sustained, equitable investment in early and primary education, quality teacher recruitment and training, inclusive curricula (including climate and digital literacy), targeted support for disadvantaged communities, evidence-based assessment and data systems, and international cooperation to build resilient education systems.
